Up All Night

Up All Night
Episode 23: Hey Jealousy
By: Carlos Uribe

Up All Night is a show about two new parents.

Spoilers Ahoy!

This week Chris gets jealous of Luke! It looks like Reagan and Luke have managed to set aside their hatred for each other and become work friends. Chris sees this new friendship developing and starts getting concerned when Luke shares a hotel room with Reagan. When he hears from one of his neighbor friends that his wife cheated on him, Christ starts to get suspicious that Luke might make a move on Reagan. He trusts his wife, but he doesn't trust Luke. He gets greener and greener with jealousy as the episode wears on. It even gets to the point where he tries to forbid Reagan from seeing Luke and then trying to assure Luke that Reagan is his wife and that isn't going to change any time soon.

Reagan thinks Chris is just being crazy. She's a bit flattered since that means that she's worth getting jealous over. When Chris and Reagan both see Luke kiss a superhot girl, it seems like the story is done. Luke doesn't have a crush with Reagan and there is no need to be jealous. Chris apologizes to his wife about being one of those jealous guys and it seems like everything is all right in the world. That is until a later scene where Reagan tells Luke about his suspicions. It quickly becomes obvious that Luke actually does have a crush on Reagan and this makes things instantly awkward between the both of them. Reagan tells Chris that Luke might have a crush on her but he doesn't get jealous. He's just happy that he was right for once and that Reagan was wrong. He just realizes that he's going to have to accept that other people might get attracted to his wife. The plot was okay, but it didn't really make me laugh that much.

There was also a sub-plot with Ava and Shayna. Ava is running a marathon to support literacy (if you're reading this article, congrats you speak english and you're literate) when Shayna challenges her in the race. Ava goes from not taking the race that seriously (exercising while drinking a milkshake) to hiring a celebrity trainer. When the celebrity trainer reveals that Ava has no shot of beating her rival, Ava decides to try and sabotage Shayna. Shayna manages to sabotage Ava and two end up looking terrible. Reagan is there to save them with a hair and makeup tent and the two end up inspiring people. It had some laughs, but it was mostly a miss with the jokes. I didn't think the celebrity trainer, played by Fred Armisen, was a very funny character.

I think this episode was just about average. It had a decent plot, but it simply wasn't very funny. It also didn't have enough sweetness to make up for the fact that most of the jokes simply didn't land. Here's hoping that the next episode, the season and maybe even series finale, manages to pick up and finish this season with a good episode because this episode simply wasn't that good. It's a big problem for this series when the inconsistency in humor has managed to stick throughout the entire season. I'll talk more about that next week, but I do hope that the show decides to shake things up next season.
