The Vampire Diaries
Episode 7: My
Brother's Keeper
Mini-Review
By: Carlos Uribe
The
Vampire Diaries is a show about Elena's love triangle with two
vampires.
Spoilers
Ahoy!
The
season up to this point has seen Elena slowly nudging towards Damon
as a romantic partner. She and Stefan have broken up over this very
reason. She has stopped trusting Stefan and has started to believe in
Damon. It should come as no surprise that this is the episode where
the two finally have sex. It's saved until the very end of the
episode when Caroline also happens to have a huge revelation. It's
entirely possible that instead of developing feelings for Damon
because he accepts her as a vampire, Elena is merely just sired to
him. She's having these problems because it was his blood that turned
her. That explains why she couldn't drink blood unless it was from
the vein and why she seems to agree with him so easily compared to
the past. This is an interesting development that could allow the
writers to shift the love triangle back towards Stefan but surely the
fans of Damon and Elena are going to see this negatively? They've
been waiting whole seasons only to find out that Elena is only into
him for supernatural reasons other than the heart must be
frustrating. It also hurts the argument that she's been going
towards Damon because it's where the character is at her life. This
is yet another twist this season (along with the cure) that might end
up doing more damage than good. It all depends on how it plays out.
Everything
else in the episode was superb. Jeremy's arc is getting really
interesting as he can't help but want to kill vampires. This includes
his sister. His desire gets so strong that he actually tries to do
that before Stefan stops him. What makes matters more complicated is
that the more vampires Jeremy kills, the stronger the desire gets but
they need Jeremy to kill more because they need to complete the map.
It's s a similar conundrum to Bonnie. She needs her magic back in
order to decpiher the map but the only way to do it is by giving
control up to Shane. Shane's plan is so extensive that he set in
motion the entire plot of desiring hybrids. Just like how the entire
episode was built around the beauty peagant, this episode is bringing
together a whole bunch of plots around Shane. The episode does have
some great character moments and it develops the relationships pretty
well. My Brother's Keeper is an excellent episode that introduces a
worrisome twist at the end.
