Stargate SG-1

Stargate SG-1
Episode 5: The First Commandment
Mini-Review
By: Carlos Uribe

Stargate SG-1 is a series about a two-way gate that can send you to different planets and the dangers of the gate. This series follows the adventures of a group of individuals as they explore the galaxy using the Stargate. The series lasted from 1997 until 2010. It began on Showtime before transferring to what is now known as the Syfy channel. It is the second longest North American science fiction series. It's the sequel to the movie “Stargate” released in 1994.

Spoilers Ahoy!

This episode began with a pretty promising opening of a soldier getting killed by another solider in a tribal society. It's a nice way to introduce the idea that one of the Stargate captains has become a God to these tribal folk. The episode manages to work with this theme relatively well to form an entertaining episode, but it was never really subtle. The ending was predictable (the captain is revealed to be a fraud, the people are saved, and the team safely return home) but it managed to work. It was in essence an episode that wasn't really great, as it was just plain good. The only problem I really had with the episode was that it felt the need to add a personal former relationship between the crazy captain and Carter. It simply felt like it was an unneeded layer that served as an excuse for the plot on why Carter wasn't immediately shot.
